2008 Columbia EC12 Regatta
Maryland MYC
November 1-2
by Jarl Wathne, Commodore, Maryland MYC
13 skippers (including 3 multiple national champions) showed up for the 2008 Columbia EC12 Regatta hosted by Maryland Model Yacht Club on November 1-2, 2008. Air temperature was in the mid60s with light NW winds. The Race Committee was composed of Mary Anne Arnett, Doug Hutchinson, and Norman Watkins. We had the typical swirling winds of Columbia with a big transition zone in the middle of the course which required a constant watch on your sails to maintain best “velocity made good”.
Danny Thomas brushed the dust off his thumbs and his 1997 Ozmun and promptly won the 1st race of the regatta. But then he had his worst 2 scores because of a bad solder joint. While Thomas momentarily faltered Jarl Wathne, defending Columbia champ 3 years running, jumped to the lead with a bullet. The next race went to Will Wagner sailing in his 1st EC12 regatta with an old hull that he meticulously rebuilt. He had consistently good finishes on Saturday with 3 wins out of 12 races sailed to keep him in 2nd, only 6 pts. behind Wathne who had 4 wins. John Ebell had an excellent start to the regatta and was in 3rd halfway through the 1st day. But he was passed by a hard-charging, no longer rusty Thomas with fixed wiring who climbed from a low of 8th back up to 3rd by day’s end. Doug “Chim Chim” Wotring also had a good day with three 2nds to pass Ebell for 4th. Also having bullets Saturday were Chris Kuhn and Joe Phillips.
Counting the earned throwout, Sunday started with Wathne-28, Wagner-34, Thomas-38, Wotring-54, Ebell-56, and Dave Ramos-57. We now had a mild to moderate Northerly coming down the lake. Wathne and Thomas put the pedal to the metal winning every race of the day except one (Ramos). However Wathne had more horsepower and he pulled away for a 15 pt win over Thomas, winning a total of 9 of the 21 races for the regatta. Thomas had 6 bullets total to cruise into 2nd, beating Wagner by 18. Ramos had a good 2nd day and vaulted from 6th to 4th by the 3rd race and ended only 5 pts. behind Wagner. Wotring’s solid racing form earned him yet another spot on the trophy podium this year by securing 5th place.
